Minister for Health Mary Coughlan, has asked the Secretary General of her Department to review the rationale for the total abolition of clinical placement payments to student nurses.
The Tanaiste has denied the decision is motivated by the upcoming election or is a pointless exercise with a new government to be in power.
Protests have been held over planned pay cuts – which will reduce the student interns’ pay to 76 per cent of the minimum staff rate this year and eventually abolish all payments in 2015.
