A Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA is calling on councillors and public representitives in Donegal to become involved in a campaign to oppose fracking, a means of extracting natural gas from the ground.
Hydraulic fracturing is a process whereby gaps are opened in the rock and fluid poured in to facilitate the seperation and extraction of the gas.
However, opponents claim that the fluid used in the process contains a cocktail of chemicals that can contaminate ground water. The process has been banned in a number of EU countries, and it’s claimed that a number of areas in the US have become wastelands after widespread fracking.
Sinn Fein MLA Phil Flanagan, a native of Garrison close to the Donegal border says exploratory licences have already been issued in Fermanagh, and Donegal could be next…………
