The Health and Safety Authority is investigating an accident in which a three-year-old girl tumbled 16 feet from a hotel balcony during wedding celebrations and had a miracle escape.
Eva Sweeney, a cousin of the bride, Ashley Gallagher, fell through a hole in a balcony railing on to a sloping tiled roof and tumbled to concrete paving.
It happened as guests were listening to a band at the Ostan Hotel, Gweedore, Co. Donegal..
After the fall, Eva was transferred from Letterkenny General to Temple Street Hospital, where she spent five days recovering from bruising to her head and body, two black eyes and an injured shoulder.
Her father, Joe, who lives in Kings Park, Glasgow, described her as an amazing girl who islucky to be alive.
Her uncle, Simon Murphy, said that it appeared Eva was playing on the balcony with other children while some wedding guests were listening to a band. Eva apparently leaned towards the balcony fence but fell through it because some panelling was missing.
The hotel issued a statement in which it said it was the first time in 41 years there was an accident at the hotel. No hotel staff witnessed the incident but management understood the child crawled through the barrier and fell on to a smaller sloping roof and then fell a further eight feet to the ground.
The HSA confirmed it is conducting an inquiry into the incident.
