The Deputy leader of Fianna Fáil , Eamon Ó Cuív, will be the special guest at a commemoration in memory of Pat O’Donnell in Derrybeg, Gaoth Dobhair on Sunday.
Mr O’Donnell was born in Gaoth Dobhair, and was executed in Newgate prison in London for the murder of James Carey, on 17th December, 1883, aged 44 years.
Carey, an informer on Land League and Fenian members, was transported to South Africa with his family where they assumed new identities.
O’Donnell met Carey on a ship in South Africa and shot him dead. French writer, Victor Hugo, was among the supporters who pleaded O’Donnell’s case prior to his death
Party members who were on the organising committee who erected a monument in 1954 will also be in attendance at the commemoration, and will lay wreaths.
