Two Derry footballers were in court for being involved in a pub brawl in Galway city after their team’s defeat in the recent semi-finals of the Celebrity Bainisteoir television series.
Both Michael McIvor, aged 25, of 31 Letteran, Cookstown, and Kieran Donnelly, aged 28, 50a Letteran Road, Moneymore, Magherafelt, Derry, avoided convictions for public order offences at Galway District Court by each making a €300 donation to the court poor box.
The Irish Examiner reports how their team, from St Michael’s Club, Lissan, Derry, managed by Daniel O’Donnell’s wife, Majella, lost to Galway side Oughterard 0-6 to 0-15.
Inspector Ernie White said the Derry team was taken out by their celebrity bainisteoir after the match: “They had too much to drink and things got out of hand. When one of the team was asked to leave the pub they all took umbrage and the trouble started.”
The judge said she would not record convictions against them if they made a €300 donation to the court poor box.
