Athletics – Five From Donegal Confirmed For World Juniors

Donegal athletes will make up one third of the Irish team to compete at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Spain. As expected five young stars from the county were named this morning on the team which will be in Barcelona from the 10th – 15th July.
Mark English (Letterkenny AC) will compete in the 800m having run an impressive 1.45.77 this season to break his own National Junior Record. This time moved him to fifth on the Irish all-time list.
Fellow Donegal athlete, Karl Griffin (Tir Chonaill AC), is also set to compete over this distance. Karl, European Youth Olympic medallist from 2011 has shown good form this year breaking English’s 800m Youth Record, running 1:49.63.
European Youth Olympic Champion, Ruairi Finnegan (Letterkenny AC) will compete in the 1500m having run 3:46.27 this year while in the longer distance event, reigning Inter club Cross Country Champion Sarah Collins (Finn Valley AC) has been selected to compete over 3,000m.
On the field, Dempsey McGuigan (Finn Valley AC) will compete in the Hammer having set an Irish Junior Record of 70.02m earlier in the year.
