Derry man returned for trial on explosive charges

A Derry man has been returned for trial to Belfast Crown Court on a series of explosive charges.
31 year old Tony Friel of Gartan Square in the city appeared at a preliminary enquiry at the local Magistrate’s Court today.
Tony Friel is charged with possessing explosives and other items with intent to endanger life on May 21 last year.
He also faces charges of possessing explosives in suspicious circumstances on the same date and possessing tools and other articles that could be used in an act of terrorism, also on the same date.
It was submitted that there was a case to answer and there were no contrary submissions.
Friel said he did not wish to call any witnesses or make any statement at this stage.
He was returned for trial in custody to appear at Belfast Crown Court on a date to be fixed.
