Dublin city is a step closer to having an elected mayor.
Dubliners will be asked next May to vote on whether they want the new office. But new research from the City Council shows 61% of over 1,000 people polled are already in favour of the move.
A forum meets tonight to start considering options. The current Dublin Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn says the city is looking for change.
“There’s clearly an appetite there for a real role for a directly elected mayor that would help drive the city forward, and that’s something we’re going to work on over the next number of months” he said.
“I’m going to bring together a forum of the 4 Dublin local authorities – and put options out to the public so that there can be a public debate”.
“It’s very important I think that the public lead this debate” he added.
