Property tax, Paul Walker top Irish Google trends for 2013

The property tax was one of the most searched for terms in Ireland this year. The annual Google Zeitgeist shows Environment Minister Phil Hogan, late actor Paul Walker and Donal Walsh were among the most searched for people in 2013.
We also googled Ryanair, the Royal baby, the Eurovision and Miley Cyrus in huge numbers over the last 12 months. In addition we looked for the meaning of ‘twerking’, we wanted to know more about Snapchat, the Harlem Shake and ‘Selfie’s’.
Travel and big events also interested the Irish with ‘Trivago’ and ‘Oxegen’ also making it into the top 10 most popular search terms of 2013.
The death of ‘Glee’ star Cory Monteith – and more recently – the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela all dominate the top trending Irish searches.
But not all publicity is good publicity as was the case for some of the entrants in this year’s list of top trending people which includes: Oscar Pistorius, Nigella Lawson, and Amanda Bynes.
Fionnaula Meehan is Director of Sales at Google.
“This year’s results show that Irish people were very interested in searching online for the latest big events – like Oxegen, Eurovision, the birth of the British royal bay all making it in the top trending searches” she said,
“We were also looking to be responsible citizens, with the property tax make it to number five in the top trending searches – and Minister Phil Hogan making it on the top of the list of politicians ahead of Enda Kenny” she added.
