There’s been another fall in the numbers the Live register in Donegal, with 19,722 people signing on at the end of last month, a 5.6% fall on the January 2013 figure.
However, while all of the other offices recorded falls, there was a substantial increase in Killybegs.
There were 960 people on the Live Register in Killybegs in January of 2013, last month that figure rose to 1,138, an increase of just over 18%.
The biggest fall was recorded in Inishowen, with 3,990 people signing on last month, a fall of 12%.
There were 1,508 people on the register in Dunfanaghy, and 1,999 in Dungloe. In both instances, a 12 month fall of 7%.
There were 1,498 signing on in Ballyshannon, a fall of 6%, with a similar fall recorded in Donegal Town where there were 1,394 people on the register at the end of last month.
There were 2,545 signing on in Ballybofey, down 5% on January 2013, while there were 5,749 on the register in Letterkenny, a fall of 4%.
Donegal South West Deputy Thomas Pringle is concerned about the rise in Killybegs, saying the while the there is always an element of seasonality in the fishing sector, that’s not enough to explain an 18% increase in the numbers.
He wants the Killybegs figure to be analysed, and action taken…………
