Significant drop in Letterkenny air pollution since introduction of smoky coal ban

Donegal County Council says early results of air pollution monitoring carried out by the HSE’s Environmental Health Service show a significant reduction in the air pollution levels in Letterkenny.
This reduction, the council says, can be directly attributed to the introduction of the “Smoky Coal Ban” to Letterkenny in May 2013.
The council has praised those working in the coal retail sector, and householders in the Letterkenny area for complying with the law, saying there has been a high level of cooperation.
Council Spokesperson Suzanne Bogan says a public awareness is ongoing, and while no major action has been necessary, the council will continue to carry out enforcement activities in this area…………..
