Farmers from all over Europe are converging in Brussels today to call for a new intervention programme to combat low prices and falling farm incomes.
Midlands North West MEP Marian Harkin is welcoming the protest, saying that for too long, the European Commission and national governments have been washing their hands of the crisis in agriculture, even though many of the problems are as a direct result of EU policy and political decisions.
She says today’s protests will send a very clear signal to the commission, and in particular, to Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan:
