Clubs and Societies Day 2015 took place on campus at Letterkenny Institute of Technology on Wednesday 23 September, 2015.
This event marks the start of the clubs and societies programme at Letterkenny I.T , and provides students, new and returning, with volunteering opportunities, sporting and recreational activities, both on and off campus.
The programme has developed significantly in the last 8 years , with the societies programme growing from 8 societies in 2007 to nearly 40 societies in 2015.
The array of activities catered for are outstanding, from technology based societies such as the ‘Android App Society’ and the ‘Ethical Hacking Society’, to the physical and activity based clubs such as the ‘Canoe Club’ and ‘Hillwalking Club’ to name but a few.
The sporting programme at the institute has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, with the LYIT Men’s Soccer team playing at the highest level in the Colleges Football Association of Ireland league.
This year the GAA Men’s team will contest the Trench Cup, and the league division 2 programme.
It is hoped that the introduction of the ‘New Entrant Sports Scholarship Programme’ will significantly enhance this period of growth.
The third level societies programme is an important part of the academic calendar and LYIT has now connected with the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) and also, the Campus Engage network, supported by the Higher Education Authority, to expand the non-academic endeavours of societies at LYIT.
