A significant redevelopment of Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry has been given the green light.
Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee has unanimously endorsed full planning permission for the further redevelopment of Altnagelvin.
The application, which was lodged last summer, provides for 144 single bedrooms to be developed in six new wards in a new three story development.
This will allow for the relocation of 144 inpatient beds from the existing tower block.
The existing roundabout will be reconfigured to allow for a new main entrance, with easier access romised for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The plan also involves the demolition of the existing car park and two storey ‘care of the elderly’ building to facilitate the new works.
The council’s Chief Executive said it’s important that decisions such as this now being made at a local level, and in its role as the new local planning authority, Derry and Strabane District Council is playing its part in the delivery of a high quality health facility which will serve the needs people in the city and the District.
