The first competitors in the exhausting 24-hour endurance event The Race are expected to complete the 250km-course on Sunday morning around 9am.
Co-organiser Sean McCrudden told Saturday Sport that – after a tough day of hailstones – the athletes face dropping temperatures overnight as they run a full 26-mile marathon through the night.
Sean said Polish man Mariusz Olejniczak (pictured) was in the lead at 6pm on Saturday and was 17 minutes ahead of the pack between Muckish Mountain and Doochary.
Donegal woman Christina McKenzie, who won the ladies’ section in 2014, is the favourite again this year.
The full course involves road and mountain running, cycling, and kayaking.
