Owenteskna Water Treatment Plant officially opens

The Owenteskna Water Treatment Plant has been officially opened today.
Irish Water says that it will benefit almost 3,000 consumers in the South West Donegal area safeguarding the water supply for the future.
The new plant will benefit homes and businesses in South West Donegal covering the area west of Killybegs including Kilcar, Carrick and Glencolumcille.
Before the new treatment plant was constructed, the water supply received minimal treatment consisting of screening and disinfection.
As a result, the Owenteskna/Kilcar Water Supply scheme was placed on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List.
The construction of the water treatment plant on the new site at Owenteskna means that the raw water is now treated more effectively.
The new treatment plant has a design output of two million litres per day and also includes a reservoir for treated water storage on site.
This has resulted in the water supply being taken off the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List last month.
