KFO calls for action on Russian trawlers

The Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation is urging the European Commission to act immediately on the presence of Russian trawlers in waters off the Faroe Islands.

It’s emerged a fleet of Russian freezer trawlers is operating in a zone shared between the UK and the Faroe islands.

KFO Chief Executive Sean O’Donoghue says the Faroes are issuing blue whiting licences to Russian boats so that they can get access to Russian arctic cod quota.

Mr O’Donoghue says while the Faroes have some autonomy on fisheries, they form part of the Kingdom of Denmark and do not have independence on critical issues such as military strategy.
