A number of staff at a fish processing factory in Killybegs have lost two days’ worth of wages after 750 tonnes of blue whiting turned to mush while being weighed at the pier.
Senator Manus Boyle stated that approximately 50 people were affected on Sunday, missing out on their double pay.
The fish was intended for human consumption but ultimately had to be used for fishmeal instead.
Senator Boyle emphasised that while the fishing community is not against monitoring, it is crucial that it is carried out correctly to prevent incidents like this from occurring:
