Tributes paid to Pope Francis

Bells have sounded around the world – flags are at half-mast – and worshippers are in mourning, following the death of Pope Francis, at the age of 88.

The Vatican last night confirmed he died from a stroke and heart failure – just hours after he blessed Easter Sunday crowds at St Peter’s Square.

He’s being remembered for speaking in support of refugees, LGBT-plus groups, and using his voice to push for global peace – although some argue his apologies for abuses within the Church, weren’t enough.
