Farmers concerned at low milk prices in Northern Ireland protested outside Stormont yesterday, and a number of County Derry farmers then went on to picket three supermarkets in Coleraine to highlight below cost selling.
The protest at Stormont coincided with a meeting of the Assembly’s Agriculture Committee.
West Tyrone MLA Joe Byrne is Vice Chair of that committee. He acknowleges that below cost selling by supermarkets is a major issue, but says the key issue is that so much of Northern Ireland’s milk is exported.
He says international markets are depressed, and what’s needed now is the setting of intervention prices and other members in London and Brussels………..
