HSE ambulances broke down 203 times last year, with 24 of the incidents recorded in Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan.
The figure, published by the journal.ie, is based on the number of times a 24-hour breakdown and recovery service responded to to callouts from stranded emergency ambulances in 2016.
Almost 5% of the National Ambulance Service fleet currently has more than 300,000km on the clock, the figure at which Garda vehicles are retired. There are currenntly 265 vehicles in the fleet
The article highlights a number of worrying incidents involving ambulances in recent years, including one in Mayo just over two years ago in which the two back wheels fell off an ambulance a transporting a patient on life support from Letterkenny to University Hospital Galway.
The Journal received the figures on foot of a Freedom of Information request to the National Ambulance Service.
