After years of false starts and fans wondering if the comeback they so desperately desired would ever happen, the Spice Girls have finally confirmed what millions have been dreaming about: a reunion.
Former member (or is it now current member once again?) Victoria Beckham set the music-loving internet ablaze on Friday afternoon when she posted a photo on her Instagram of all five of the original members together again. Just a short time later, another pic was uploaded with music and television industries titan Simon Fuller, who played a big role in helping them become as massively popular as they were in the ’90s.
While everybody in the world began to assume that something big was coming, there wasn’t initially any confirmation. But it didn’t take long for a representative for Beckham to assure the masses that yes, the Spice Girls have reunited. The statement released is rather vague, but at the moment, the exciting part of the missive is that all five women are on board with whatever ends up happening with the Spice Girls name, which had seemed like something that was never going to happen again.
The statement (shared with Entertainment Weekly) claims that the women “enjoyed a wonderful afternoon catching up and reminiscing about the amazing times,” which was visible in the Instagram photos. The five chart-toppers “are always overwhelmed at how much interest there is across the whole world for the Spice Girls.” The message ends with the cryptic but thrilling idea that “the time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together.”
People immediately began to wonder what these “new opportunities” could be, and while the representatives connected to the group didn’t get into details, there are reports that suggest many a fan might be let down when the future becomes a bit clearer.
According to one report this reunion might produce another greatest hits compilation, a TV show (possibly in China) and a number of deals with major brands … but no new music, and perhaps not even any concerts. The last time they got back together, in 2007-8, the five powerhouse singers toured the U.S., Canada, Spain, Germany and of course the U.K., and it was a rousing success. The Return of the Spice Girls (as the trek was called) netted over $100 million with fewer than 50 shows, and there was plenty of demand for more.
