A major multi-agency rescue operation is continuing off the County Mayo coast this afternoon.
A man in his 40s has now spent over 20 hours trapped in a cave at Downpatrick Head after being cut off by the tide yesterday evening.
A second person – a woman – was brought to safety by kayakers yesterday, but since then heavy sea-swells have blocked the entrance to the cave.
Garda Superintendent Gabriel Moran is among those at the scene – he’s told Midwest Radio that the emergency services have maintained contact with the man, and that they’re making another attempt at low tide this evening…
