The Health Minister says it’s no longer tenable to cite Covid 19 as a reason not to reopen day care services for the elderly.
The issue was raised in the Dail by Sligo Leitrim and South Donegal TD Marian Harkin, who said a number of centres still haven’t reopened.
Ms Harkin raised the issue after councillors in Leitrim passed a motion calling on the HSE to immediately reopen day-care centres for older people that were closed due to Covid.
Responding, Minister Stephen Donnelly promised to speak to the HSE himself………
Statement from the HSE:
Older Persons Services continue to restore Day Care Services throughout Community Healthcare Cavan Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Sligo (CH CDLMS) HSE services. A CH CDLMS steering group has overseen the resumption of day services in Community Healthcare Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Sligo across HSE direct, voluntary and for profit providers which began in July 2021 in line with Public Health Guidance.
To date 81% of Day Service facilities have reopened within the area. However, there are a number of Day Service facilities which require additional refurbishment work in order to ensure compliance with Infection Prevention and Control guidance.
In the interim period, during these works, additional places have been provided in alternative Day Service facilities with transport provided through Local Link or alternative if required.
In addition, increased hours for home respite have also been provided to support the individual, families and carers.
Meals on Wheels continues to be supported within the local community.
The HSE continues to work towards the full reopening of all remaining units within existing facilities or via third party providers in alternative facilities.
