The Secretary General of the United Nations has hailed the ‘remarkable courage’ of Private Sean Rooney who was killed when the convoy he was travelling in came under attack in Lebanon in December 2022.
According to the Irish Independent, in a letter to the 24 year old’s mother, Antonio Guterres said Private Rooney was a “courageous and fearless” soldier.
The family of Private Rooney previously said they were concerned and frustrated that the United Nations failed to respond to a coroner’s request for assistance in examining the circumstances of his death.
The family of Private Sean Rooney have made public the letter to Natasha McCloskey from UN Chief Antonio Guterres.
In it he said he wanted to, ‘on behalf of the United Nations,’ express his ‘profound appreciation for the remarkable courage in the face of the extraordinary risks that Private Sean Cormac Rooney took on December 14th 2022.’
Mr Guterres said Private Rooney’s ‘courage and selflessness’ reflect the best tradition of the United Nations.
He added that his brave actions in trying to extricate the vehicle he was driving from an extremely dangerous environment undoubtedly saved the lives of three other people. This he say, is an example to all his comrades.
The UN Chief concluded his correspondence to Mrs McCloskey by commending and thanking Private Rooney for his ‘exemplary courage.’
