Lighter fuel attack trial underway in Derry

The trial has begun at Derry Crown Court of a man accused of pouring lighter fuel over another man and setting it alight.
28-year-old Lee Healy of 10, Asylum Road in Derry is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent on another man on January 28 last year.
The jury was told that the incident stemmed from a drinking session involving Healy and the injured party, Francis Doherty, on that date.
Both men were drinking and then went back to a hostel where the injured party was staying.
Staff there were concerned for the man who was described in court as ‘vulnerable’ and tried to persuade him to stay but he left again with Healy and they went to another man’s address in the Rosemount area of the city.
There the jury was told Doherty fell asleep and Healy was alleged to have gone and got a container of lighter fuel, poured it over him and set it alight.
The other man there poured a bucket of water over the injured party and Healy and the injured man left.
The court was told that when Doherty returned to the hostel staff called for medical assistance.
Doherty attended Altnagelvin Hospital and was sent home, but a short time later was re-admitted and taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he was a patient for more than a week.
The trial continues.
