Paul McGinley will become the first Irishman to captain the European Ryder Cup team at Gleneagles in Scotland in 2014.
The 46-year-old who we like to claim a Donegal man, as his parents Mick and Julia are from the county, was the unanimous choice of the European Tour’s Players Committee to succeed Jose Maria Olazabal.
After Darren Clarke withdrew his nomination last week, McGinley had to fight-off a late challenge from 2010 captain Colin Montgomerie to win the nomination.
He’ll aim to retain the trophy, up against the United States led by Tom Watson.
Paul made three consecutive, victorious Ryder Cup appearances as a player (2002-2006), holing the winning putt at The Belfry in his first appearance. He has been a vice-captain twice and has captained two successful Great Britain & Ireland teams in the Vivendi Seve Trophy.
