Gardai in Donegal have said they haven’t been called to investigate allegations of racism against Travellers.
The confirmation comes as another Donegal politician joined in the row over a council’s preparations to give a house in an upmarket country area to a family of 13 travellers.
Last week, the Donegal Travellers Project said it is deeply shocked, saddened and outraged by the comments made by Donegal Councillor Sean Mc Eniff.
The Fianna Fáil representative is opposed to the purchase of a house, by Donegal County Council, for social housing in Ballyshannon at a cost of 230-thousand euro for a traveller family.
Now Ballyshannon town councillor Eugene Dolan, a former mayor of the town, said: “As far as I am concerned they can be sent to Spike Island for all I care.”
The Fine Gael councillor was backing Fianna Fail Donegal County councillor Sean McEniff who also claimed last week that travellers should live in isolation on their own away from settled people.
Mr McEniff insisted he was being practical in his observation and “not racist or bigoted.”
Senior garda sources said today that no investigation was under way as they had not received any complaint of racism.
