Almost 13,000 Irish passports recalled following printing error

A recent printing error on Irish passports is an embarrassment for the Department of Foreign Affairs, according to a travel expert.

It comes as thousands of passports are being recalled because they are missing the letters ‘IRL’.

It’s feared they may not be acceptable at border control.

The mistake occurred on passports issued between December 23rd, 2025 and January 6th.
