Heritage Council expands schools programme

The Heritage Council has announced it is expanding its Heritage in Schools Programme to secondary schools.

Designed to deliver workshops in schools, since 2000, over 3,000 visits have been made to over 1,000 schools.

Donegal secondary schools have until July 6th to apply for a new Heritage Council programme, with workshops expected to begin in 2027.

The Heritage Council says the new Heritage in Schools Post-Primary Programme will connect students with heritage specialists through engaging, curriculum-linked workshops.

The initiative, which is co-funded, coordinated, and monitored by the council, is designed to provide high-quality learning experiences that link local and national heritage with classroom studies.

Applications are also open to heritage specialists interested in taking part. The council hopes to recruit experts from a wide range of disciplines, including archaeology, history, Gaeilge, folklore, ecology, biodiversity, geology, Irish traditional music, traditional crafts, building skills, and conservation.

The selection process will be based on heritage expertise, communication skills, experience working with young people, interview performance, and additional strengths in areas such as the Irish language, built heritage, and inclusive heritage.

An online information webinar for prospective applicants will take place on June 5th.
