Police in Derry City and Strabane are warning people about romance scams, saying they’ve had a report of an incident in recent days in which a person lost money to someone they’d met online.
They say it’s a reminder to be vigilant as scammers will use varying methods to steal money online after gaining someone’s trust.
The PSNI say scammers don’t care about broken hearts, or the impact of their fraud, which can be really distressing, alongside the financial impact.
They’re advising people not to send money to someone they haven’t met in person. If someone is looking for friendship, companionship or love online, they say it should never start with being asked for money and, if it does, it’s not a friend or relationship you want.
The PSNI’s online post says romance scams are under reported because people may feel embarrassed, but help and support is always available.
