A 47-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Bogdan Michalkiawicz in Letterkenny last month.
Dariusz Weckowicz, a Polish native of no fixed abode, was arrested and charged at Letterkenny Garda Station at midday before appearing at Carn District Court this afternoon.
When the murder charge was explained to him, Mr. Weckowicz replied: “I did not kill this man. I am more than 100 per cent sure of that.”
Bogdan Michalkiawicz was killed in a frenzied attack at Westside Apartments, Lower Main Street, Letterkenny some time between Monday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 15, when his body was discovered by his brother.
Wearing a tracksuit top and jeans, the murder accused was handcuffed and flanked by armed Gardai in the courtroom.
Judge Paul Kelly heard that Mr. Weckowicz was first detained for questioning by Gardai on Sunday night. He was released briefly this morning before being rearrested and charged with murder.
Defence solicitor Kieran Dillon told the court that there ‘may be some issues’ relating to Mr. Weckowicz’s detention.
The defendant has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Harristown Court on Friday, June 21.
