A review of ambulance services has been published by HIQA, which says the automatic transfer of patients to hospital emergency departments is unsustainable, and contributes to delayed patient handovers. New models are needed which can help overcome such holdups, which have contributed to delays in ambulances reaching other patients.
This has been identified as a factor in the case of Donegal woman Maura Porter, who was hit by a car close to her home in Carndonagh, and waited for almost an hour on the roadside for an ambulance.
