The campaign for a replacement bridge at Mullantyboyle in Glenties is being brought to the Dail this week after confirmation that Donegal County Council has submitted a formal application for funding to the Department of the Environment.
The bridge collapsed five years ago, and since then the local community has campaigned to have it repaired.
Local people say that if the centre of Glenties was blocked because of an emergency, gardai, fire and ambulance services could face a 30 mile delay to get there, and this is a substantial health and safety issue.
Donegal South West Deputy Pearse Doherty has met with Donegal County Council to discuss the issue, and says he will not pursue it in Leinster House…………
