Buncrana Town Council is to honour the bravery of an Inishowen teenager who risked his own life to save the drowning passengers of a submerged car.
Jason McClay, from Kinnego jumped off a 40ft ravine into a pitch-dark Crana River just over a week ago to rescue the passengers of a car which had left the road, careering 50 yards through a field and off a steep drop into the water close to Cockhill Bridge.
There were four passengers in the car when in went into the river – one girl and three boys, believed to age between 16 and 19-years-old. Two of the men were unable to swim and Jason helped pull them to safety, even swimming in through the car’s back window to make sure there was no one else trapped inside.
Cllr Peter McLaughlin said that the teenager is a hero, and if it wasn’t for him there most certainly would have been a tragedy…..
