Udaras 2010 report shows brunt of job losses in Donegal

The annual report of Udaras na Gaeltachta says a total of 535 new full-time jobs were approved last year, 194 of them in Donegal.
However. when job losses are taken into account, there’s been a net decrease of 398 jobs, with Donegal beraring the brunt of the job losses.
Udaras na Gaeltachta’s annual report for 2010 shows that overall employment in Donegal last year declined by 243 jobs, with the majority of job losses occurring in the Largo Foods group of companies based on the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park.
However, the report says Udaras is encouraged by the significant investment made by Largo Foods group  to target the healthy snack food market, and officials are confident that employment numbers will rise again when this development is implemented.
The report says it is encouraging to see a substantial amount of new jobs in new projects approved in the Donegal Gaeltacht last year. A total of 193 new full time positions were approved in projects which will involve a total investment of €16.7 million when those projects are fully operational. Many of these new jobs will be coming on-stream in 2011 and over the subsequent two years.
