Irish team coach Patsy McGonagle has been praising the efforts of Darren Mc Brearty and Tori Pena at the European Indoor Championships in Paris. On Friday Mc Brearty qualified as one of the fastest losers despite having the fourth fastest time from all five 800m heats. Then on Saturday afternoon he came within a heartbeat of reaching the final. The Letterkenny athlete led at the bell but was reined in to finish fifth in a time of 1:49:78.
He told Will Downing he wanted much better.
Finn Valley’s Tori Pena set a new Irish national record in the women’s pole vault at the European Indoors. She cleared a new mark of 4m35 – but missed out at 4m45, finishing twelfth with only the top eight qualifying.
Tori’s told Will Downing she’s happy – but a bit disappointed at the same time.
Speaking on Saturday Sport Irish team coach Patsy McGonagle says both athletes really excelled in Paris.
