The Government has allocated funding of 50,000 euro for the exploratory excavation of a possible Spanish Armada wreck off the coast of Burtonport.
Research to date has shown the wreck, in Rutland Bay, is likely to be part of the Spanish Armada which perished of the coast of Ireland in the 16 centaury.
It is understood the wreck is in good condition.
The money is coming from Minister Dinny McGinley’s department; he says this has the potential to be of huge benefit to the area:
