16 year old spoken to by police following lifebelt vandalism on Derry’s Peace Bridge

Police in Derry have confirmed they have dealt with an instance in the early hours of yesterday morning in which lifebelts were being thrown into the Foyle from the Peace Bridge.
Last week, former Mayor Cllr Kevin Campbell said he was becoming very worried about the frequency of such incidents, saying lives were being put at risk.
In a statement this afternoon, police in Derry confirmed that they responded to a call shortly at 12 .30 yesterday morning after CCTV controllers identified two males interfering with the life saving equipment on the Peace Bridge. Officers attended and spoke to a 16 year old boy who admitted throwing a number of life belts into the water. The boy’s family were contacted and it was agreed that the matter would be dealt with by way of discretionary disposal.
The 16 year old was informed of the dangers of interfering with life saving equipment and has undertaken to assist with a local community project.
He will also be referred to a PSNI Youth Diversion Officer.
Police have paid tribute to Foyle Search & Rescue for their assistance, and the recovery all the life belts.
