Shatter denies garda reputation is on the line over Smithwick

The Minister for Justice has denied that the reputation of An Garda Siochana is on the line as a result of the findings of the Smithwick Tribunal.
Alan Shatter has apologised for any shortcomings on behalf of the Irish state and says he will raise the findings of the report in the Dail.
The report which was published yesterday found that there was Garda collusion in the 1989 shootings of two senior RUC officers Harry Breen and Bob Buchanan in south Armagh.
Minister Shatter says the government now needs time to digest the serious findings of the report.
“This Tribunal has reached a conclusion of great seriousness – both myself, my government colleagues and indeed members of An Garda Siochana and the PSNI require time now to consider the content of the report” he said.
“It has some very serious recommendations contained in the report – there’s the issue of assessing those and considering their implementation” he added.
