It’s emerged that Donegal is one of just two local authorities in the country which had no “brown bin” kerbside collection in 2012. That system is being introduced in Letterkenny at the moment, and will then be extended to other areas of the county.
Figures published this morning by the EPA show that in 2012, just over 21,300 tonnes of household waste was collected in Donegal, just over 14,000 of which was mixed residual waste in black bags, with 3,700 tonnes of dry recyclables collected.
Just over 2,700 tonnes of material was brought to bring banks, while 685 tonnes was brought to civic amenity sites.
The landfill site at Ballintra accepted almost 20,200 tonnes in 2012, 4,000 tonnes up on the previous year.
Nationally, the country generated more than 2.6 million tons of waste in 2012 – a 4 per cent drop on the previous year.
For the first time in 2012 the amount of waste managed for recovery exceeded the amount managed for disposal.
