If you thought three Avatar sequels are not enough then you are in luck, director James Cameron has announced there will now be four follow-ups to the box office hit.
The Titanic film-maker was the surprise guest at Fox’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and dropped the bombshell, saying: “We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga.”
The original film starred Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver.
James said as he was planning the three sequels, he found it limiting, telling the convention of cinema owners: “We began to bump up against the limitations for our art form.”
He told the crowd: “I’ve been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters to design the world of Avatar going forward: the characters, the creatures, the environment, the new cultures.
“So far, the art I’m seeing is, in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film.”
The original 2009 film earned $2.8 billion (£2bn) worldwide.
