He played a big part in the Blues’ promotion from League Two that year and soon after signed a permanent deal at the start of the 2015/16 season in which he scored once in 18 games.
He followed up his first full season at the club with his best in English football last season, scoring eight goals in 38 appearances despite missing two months through injury.
Speaking about his new contract on the Southend website, McLaughlin said: “I’m already settled here but now I know my future I can really look forward to the next few years and what it holds for me.”
