Figures show sharp fall in Council’s house acquisition

Donegal County Council has bought a total of 215 houses over the lifetime of the current council, with 175 houses in the council’s ownership and a further 40 agreed purchases which are awaiting legal transfer.
The majority of the houses were bought in 2016 and 2017.
The figures have been published by the executive in response to a question from Cllr Jack Murray.
They show that in 2014, the council bought 15 houses, rising to 22 in 2015. 2016 saw a rise of almost 300% to 60 houses, with a slight fall back to 57 in 2017.
Last year, there was a sharp fall, with 21 houses bought in 2018.
The council says it is continuing to source suitable properties for acquisition this year.
Of the houses bought so far, 49 were bought in the Letterkenny Municipal District, 37 in Inishowen, 35 in Glenties, 34 in Stranorlar and 20 in the Donegal Municipal District.
