Gardaí warn of dangerous social media “Momo” Challenge

Gardaí in Donegal have issued a warning over a new game targeting children and vulnerable people on social media.
The ‘Momo’ Challenge is a form of cyber bullying which asks the person contacted, often children, to perform a series of dangerous acts.
In the Momo Challenge, children and vulnerable people are tricked into communicating with a character, represented by a disturbing image.
“Momo” then asks the person contacted to carry out a number of dangerous tasks which in some cases has included self harming.
The challenge has been noticed spreading among children in Northern Ireland and the UK, with an Garda Siochana issuing a warning to parents here to be vigilant.
They’ve urged parents to supervise their children’s online activity and have warned this challenge could present a real danger if it goes unnoticed.
