It’s been claimed that a fire hydrant, close to the worst of the weekend gorse fires in West Donegal was blocked, preventing fire crews and locals from having a readily available water supply to combat the blaze.
It’s reported that the hydrant, located at Belcruit National School has been covered over with tar, resulting in those trying to fight the fire having to go elsewhere to access water.
The issue has led to calls on Irish Water to carry out a full audit of all fire hydrants across the county.
Local Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says it could easily have been a life or death situation and for hydrants to be blocked in a crisis situation is totally unacceptable:
