80% increase in text, call & email fraud

 

There’s been an 80 percent increase in text, call and email fraud over the past two years.
45 cases were reported to gardaí last month.
More than 640,000 euro was reported stolen through these types of scams last year.
The oldest person to be targeted last month was 88 years old.
Brexit and the pandemic have added a new dimension as the increase in online shopping creates more opportunities for the fraudster.
The most common types are pretending to be from a bank, where people are invited to click a link, and then asked for personal details,
Gardaí are advising people not to respond to these texts and to never give away financial information.
