€40 million confirmed for new Cross Border Research Fund

€40 million in funding has been announced for a new North-South research programme, with a number of prospective North West projects expected to apply.

Government say that the money, which will be provided via the Shared Island Fund, will go towards the deepening of links between higher educational institutions North and South, as well as improving links between researchers and research communities on both sides of the border.

There will be three types of projects supported: Strand 1, which involves individual researchers working together on a shared research project, Strand 2, which will help research teams work together on a shared work programme, promoting interdisciplinary work, and Strand 3, which will help higher education institutions to work together based on shared institutional research priorities.

In year 1 of the scheme, up to a maximum of €100,000 will be given to research projects from Strand 1, whereas projects from Strands 2 and 3 may receive up to €1 million, with a maximum of 50% of the money allowed to be shared with collaborative researchers and partners in Northern Ireland.

LYIT President Paul Hannigan expects the college to be involved in a number of applications………..
