The Taoiseach is being urged to devise a plan to secure more quota for Ireland at the next review of the Common Fisheries Policy.
The call has come from Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn, who told the Dail last evening that at present, the Irish fishing fleet is allocated 15% of the fish in our own waters, while 85% is allocated to the fishing fleets of other EU Member States.
He says this is in contrast to France, which has an allocation of over 50% in its own waters……..
Responding, Taoiseach Michael Martin said he is in discussion with the EU commission on the issue, and told the Fisheries Commissioner during his recent visit to Ireland that Ireland wants a more equitable share of stock.
He hit out at Deputy MacLochlainn, accusing him of offering slogans rather than solutions…….
