Owners who don’t control their dogs are facing tougher fines.
A report will go to cabinet this morning after a review was ordered in the wake of an attack on a young child by a pit bull terrier in Co. Wexford last year.
Its recommending that 40 extra dog wardens are hired across the country.
Fines under the control of dogs act will double to €5,000 while a single central database for dog microchips will be created.
A central database for dog breeders will also be set up to tighten regulations around the sale and supply of dogs.
